Always the way :)

There are essentially two parts to what we're trying to achieve here.
We have a large number of photos of events that are currently stored
in regular photo-albums, which is a nuisance to browse/search (since
there's only the one copy of each picture - only one person can have
the album) and involves people scanning the photo if they wish to use
it in a digital form (publishing, web page, etc). An obvious solution
to this is to have a web-based gallery with additional metadata.
(This has been extended slightly to include other media such as text
so people looking to compile a publication can easily find content)
Additionally we have a vast number of historical images that we would
like to access in a similar manner (sourced from negatives via a
'film-scanner').
With all of these we want to be able to control who has access to the
image, keep a high-resolution copy for printing, and provide a way
for others (who have access :) to add comments to help us identify
who/what is in the image.
And, of course, people need to be able to add their images themselves,
so we don't have to add them all ourselves :) (But they need to be
approved before others see them, to ensure the content is acceptable)
There are some interesting questions coming with respect to how
access control is dealt with, as (for now) the 'internal' school
users and the 'archive' former pupil users are entirely seperate,
so it's not immediately straightforward to re-use railroad
entries from one in the other. (In fact we're putting all the
images in the one place, the only difference is that different
sets of images from the repository may be available to each
group)
