Message-ID: <20071219185052.GA24076@code0.codespeak.net> Hi all! Around the Gothenburg sprint, we mentioned the idea to hold a sprint in Leysin (Switzerland) again this winter. We don't have the EU any more to pay us, but the Swiss Franc is now cheaper compared to the Euro :-) I checked with the "usual place", Chalet Ermina, and with my own schedule. The best dates would be in January before the 26th; afterwards it becomes a bit harder. If mid-January is too soon or otherwise too impossible for too many people I can check again for later in the winter, say in March (ski conditions are usually still good). What do you think about it? We should think about how this interacts with Michael Leuschel's idea to do a paper sprint at one point in winter (probably in Leysin too). I personally wouldn't mind coming to a sprint in January, but on the other hand I would really like to do this paper sprint and probably couldn't go to two sprints that are close to each other. Michael, Carl Friedrich mentioned that you are also interested in coming one week, for a "paper writing and skiing" sprint. It seems that there are two options: either mid-January, before the 26th; or later in the winter, say around March. Are you still interested? If so, maybe we'll actually hold a "paper writing" sprint at one of these dates and a more regular PyPy sprint at the other. Do you have a preference? A bientot, Armin. Hi all, I'm also interested in both sprints; what about combining the twos (i.e., doing one right after the other) to reduce traveling costs? Although I agree that it might be harder to find a longer timespan which everyone agrees. ciao Anto From tismer at stackless.com Fri Dec 21 01:37:15 2007 From: tismer at stackless.com (Christian Tismer) Date: Thu, 20 Dec 2007 16:37:15 -0800 Subject: [pypy-sprint] [pypy-dev] Sprint in Leysin? At the moment I propose the following agenda: * PyPy sprint January 12-19th * paper writing sprint in March The question is if enough people can make it at these dates in January. If not, then I guess we might also consider booking already now two consecutive weeks in March, with the idea that the people interested in attending both weeks are also the ones more likely to be able to book two weeks out of their agenda. January 12-19th works for me, even though I'm busy on 13th so I would arrive on 14th. Two consecutive weeks in march are more problematic, because I'll go to a PhD school from 3th to 14th; I know that it's me that proposed to do that, but I forgot that engagement -- sorry :-). To sum up: +1 for doing the sprint in january. ciao Anto From niko at alum.mit.edu Mon Dec 24 16:13:41 2007 From: niko at alum.mit.edu (Niko Matsakis) Date: Mon, 24 Dec 2007 10:13:41 -0500 Subject: [pypy-sprint] Sprint in Leysin In-Reply-To: <20071223161514.GA13946@code0.codespeak.net> References: <20071220120004.GA15385@code0.codespeak.net> <476A9E63.4050101@gmail.com> <20071223161514.GA13946@code0.codespeak.net> Message-ID: <0639F38A-3F6C-4481-AFD7-E2EA7D7C14CA@alum.mit.edu> > * PyPy sprint January 12-19th > * paper writing sprint in March I would not be able to attend a sprint for those dates in January... March I could do. What is the planned topic of the paper writing sprint? Merry Christmas everyone, Niko From arigo at tunes.org Mon Dec 31 17:35:36 2007 From: arigo at tunes.org (Armin Rigo) Date: Mon, 31 Dec 2007 17:35:36 +0100 Subject: [pypy-sprint] PyPy Leysin Winter Sprint (12-19th January 2008) Message-ID: <20071231163536.GA11745@code0.codespeak.net> ===================================================================== PyPy Leysin Winter Sprint (12-19th January 2008) ===================================================================== .. image:: http://www.ermina.ch/002.JPG The next PyPy sprint will be in Leysin, Switzerland, for the fifth time. This is a fully public sprint: newcomers and topics other than those proposed below are welcome. ------------------------------ Goals and topics of the sprint ------------------------------ * Like previous winters, the main side goal is to have fun in winter sports :-) We can take a couple of days off for ski; at this time of year, ski days end before 4pm, which still leaves plenty of time to recover (er, I mean hack). * the overall idea of the sprint is to continue working on making PyPy ready for general use. A few more specific tasks: - app-level ctypes: getting to a basically usable point would be really nice. - JIT: there is a long-standing timeshifter refactoring, towards making the JIT be more interpreter-like. Starting it during the sprint might be a good way to share some of the knowledge of how the JIT really works. Alternatively, we can work on supporting ootype in the timeshifter. - Testing: e.g. we run various nightly test runs but the results are not summarized in a single page yet. - LLVM: llvm 2 is now at version 2.1 and nicely stable again. Our llvm backend has improved in the last few months, but refactoring it together with the genc backend to share code more directly would be a nice task. * We are open to all sorts of other tasks during the sprint, just propose something. ----------------------- Location & Accomodation ----------------------- Leysin, Switzerland, "same place as before". Let me refresh your memory: both the sprint venue and the lodging will be in a very spacious pair of chalets built specifically for bed & breakfast: http://www.ermina.ch/. The place has a good ADSL Internet connexion with wireless installed. You can of course arrange your own lodging anywhere (so long as you are in Leysin, you cannot be more than a 15 minute walk away from the sprint venue), but I definitely recommend lodging there too -- you won't find a better view anywhere else (though you probably won't get much worse ones easily, either :-) I made pre-reservations in the Chalet, so please *confirm* quickly that you are coming so that we can adjust the reservations as appropriate. The rate so far has been around 60 CHF a night all included in 2-person rooms, with breakfast. There are larger rooms too (less expensive) and maybe the possibility to get a single room if you really want to. Please register by svn: http://codespeak.net/svn/pypy/extradoc/sprintinfo/leysin-winter-2008/people.txt or on the pypy-sprint mailing list if you do not yet have check-in rights: http://codespeak.net/mailman/listinfo/pypy-sprint You need a Swiss-to-(insert country here) power adapter. There will be some Swiss-to-EU adapters around - bring a EU-format power strip if you have one. ----------- Exact times ----------- Officially, 12th-19th January 2008. Both dates are flexible, you can arrive or leave earlier or later. We will give introductions and tutorials depending on who needs them, either on the 13th or the 14th. -+- Carl Friedrich, Armin
