I was in england last summer for G.U.A.D.E.C.! Nice to meet you.

To be honest, a language interpreter/compiler is not an easy project 
starter project. I remember sweating through the introductory scheme 
course at Berkeley, where we had to write a scheme interpreter in scheme 
for our final project. But if you can wrap your head around it, it will 
be worth the effort.
